Properties quarantined after crazy ant outbreak

It was like something out of a horror movie, officials have said.

"The discovery of a mass of red ants in one of the parking lots of the South Shore Recreation Area had all kinds of people wondering," South Shore Recreation Area Director Kevin Eagan said. "The first thing they did is come out with a statement that said they had not seen anything like this in years, and it was not something that would be expected to have happened here."

No word on how the giant ants got in the parking lots, but officials say they hope they don't hurt anyone.

"It was an unexpected situation," Eagan said. "We've never had this many ants around here. The lot is empty at this time of year. We were all kind of on edge as everybody looked around to see how the ant population would handle this."

It's not clear if the ants might have come from the same place that caused an outbreak of dengue in January, Eagan said.

"We have a large community here that lives in this area. We have not had any of the transmission cases before," he said. "And then these really do seem to be on-going now."

Officials suspect that the ants arrived late last year, when a large group of ants living in the area started buzzing at the same time, as they do on a daily basis.

Authorities believe the area in the parking lots is a breeding colony for them, and it's possible they arrived as a small, single colony, Eagan said.

They'll monitor the lot closely for any more signs of the ants.
